Introduction Algebra is an important topic in the school mathematics curriculum. The application of algebra can be found in all current branches of mathematics and science in general. In Malaysia, algebra covers one third of the secondary school mathematics curriculum (Ministry of Education Malaysia, 2003). It is considered an important topic in the PMR (Lower Secondary School Evaluation) and SPM (Malaysia Certificate of Education) examinations. Hence, proficiency in solving algebraic problems is pertinent to the students' overall mathematics achievement in the national examinations.
