ABSTRACT The development, operation, and achievements of SAFE are described in this article. Major points covered include SAFE's operating principles, methods of acquiring donated books and other educational materials, delivery of shipments of materials to the Sudan and their subsequent distribution to academic and public libraries, and the accomplishments of the program from its beginning in 1985 through June 30, 2004. Additional humanitarian projects completed cooperatively by SAFE and the Ahfad University for Women (AUW) are also described. The article also includes a list of SAFE officers and directors, as of 2004, and the names of organizations that have benefited from the work of SAFE.
