Description

Repertory with Roots: Black Youth, Black History, Black Culture, Black Music and the Bible takes the reader on a journey of pedagogical engagement that encompasses critical thinking, creative exploration, reflective journaling and collaborative learning. This holistic educational framework comprised of five experiential lessons promotes seeing, reaching, hearing and engaging youth in a manner that fosters their identity formation as unashamedly Black, unapologetic Christians.

Richelle White’s book is a rare and much needed addition to current resources for black youth. Above all, it is the authentic expression of a seasoned black youth minister who shares real scenarios experienced with contemporary youth. It is a creative, engaging approach to black history that reaches back while showing its relevance for the present and future, especially embracing contemporary black youth as today’s history-makers. The book is undergirded with biblical texts and theological constructs which promote youth empowerment and transformation in the place of ever-present negative stereotypes. It draws upon references to popular music, film and ritual practices such as Kwanzaa. The book includes powerful lesson plans on such topics as physical appearance, hair type, positive character traits and values. It is an inviting, refreshing curriculum that will lead black youth to recalibrate their identity upward and strengthen their racial pride. This is a book that every black youth and youth advocate needs.
